Over £1million saved by fly-tipping campaign

Our fly-tipping enforcement initiative which started ten years ago has saved tax payers in Buckinghamshire over £1million.

The ‘Illegal Dumping Costs’ initiative was started in October 2003, when fly-tipping levels were increasing by 10% each year. Now, Buckinghamshire is leading the way nationally, convicting ten times more offenders than are being convicted on average across the country.

Fly-tipping is not only a nuisance, blighting our beautiful county, but can be very costly for those who have to deal with the consequences.  Ten years on and we are convicting at the rate of one offender every week in Bucks.

To date we have:

  • Seen 385 convictions made
  • Total bill for offenders of almost £500,000 in fines and awarded prosecution costs
  • A man was sent straight to prison for 14 weeks after dumping illegally in the High Wycombe area on a second conviction.
  • 40% of convictions are where householders or businesses have not ensured that waste has been managed and disposed of correctly.

Residents are vital in the fight against fly-tipping, with a third of convictions resulting from eye-witness reports.  Report fly-tipping in Buckinghamshire by calling 0845 330 1856 or report it online
